Eadweard Muybridge: The Human Figure in Motion. Miscellaneous phases (1887/1901)

Eadweard Muybridge’s work “The Human Figure in Motion” (first published in 1901) contains not only his famous chronographical sequences that document the human body movement in a perfectly timed series of photographs (see also here for the sequences), but also an extensive appendix with more than 300 selected single images.

Aim of this selection of single shots is to focus on or to compare individual phases of the human body movement – and to offer a concise and at the same time more precise view of interesting movement phases.

In the following, 307 of a total of 348 individual images have been reproduced. The movement studies of children again havent been digitized. Since the reproduction of the pictures in the two galleries correspond to the original arrangement in the book, some of the sequences seem to be backwards. However, this is what is wanted.

All of the pictures shown in “The Human Figure in Motion” were first published in Muybridge’s major work “Animal Locomotion. An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements ” and originally made in the years 1872-1885 (!).
