Melpomene (1906)

Melpomene (1906)

Roman statute of Melpomene, daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne and the Muse of Tragedy. As seen in the picture, she is often represented with a tragic mask and, as here, with a wreath of vines and grapes, alluding to Dionysos, the greek god of the grape harvest and winemaking, of ritual madness, fertility, religious ecstasy – and the theatre.
